19304 vote Movie Info In the year leading up to the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, the four Smith daughters learn lessons of life and love, even as they prepare for a reluctant move to New York 1944 Vincente Minnelli 113minute countries USA. I am from St. Louis and of course I love this film. But even as a kid, I thought this was one of the most poignant scenes ever. When he takes the piece of cake, his look is saying you believe in me, don't you? And her kiss is the answer. You and I was probably meant as a Victorian song, popular when they were courting. They began as you and I and became you and I and all of us. My husband and I attended a St Louis production at the Muny outdoor theater and hundreds of couples sang along. Not a dry eye in the house.

This movie is so very cool. I think Il make everyone watch it when im in charge.
I grew up watching this in the early 60's. What a gas it was. I was in kindergarten and tried to sing along with Mitch and the gang all the time. They just don't make programs like this anymore.

Meet me in the movie is about the life of a well established St. Louis family named Smith. The family has four daughters named Rose (Lucille Bremer) Esther (Judy Garland) Agnes (Joan Carroll) and Tootie (Margaret O'Brien. The second oldest child falls Esther in love with the boy next door. John Truett (Tom Drake) by name. He is standing on the lawn next door while Esther is on her front porch. In autumn the girls prepare Tootie and Agnes for trick or treating. They meet at a bonfire and decide which house each child is to take. Tootie decides to take the hardest aukoff's (Mayo Newhall. She goes to the front porch and knocks on the door and when he opens the door Tootie throws flour in his face and declares that he is dead. `I killed him' she exclaims.
All at once, the father (Leon Ames) enters the room and announces that he has received a position in New York and they will be moving after Christmas.
Everyone is up in a roar because they don't want to leave their friends, especially Esther who has finally made the boy next door notice her. At the winter dance, she awaits John but, where is he? John didn't get his suit before the dry cleaners closed, so he borrows one and finally shows up. Esther tells him about having to leave St. Louis, and John tells her it will be okay that they will always love each other. As he walks her home under a snowy moonlight sky, John asks Esther to be his bride. Esther says "I have dreamed of this moment for so long.' Tootie waits at the window for Santa to arrive; she is worried that Santa won't be able to find her next year. Esther comforts her little sister and sings `Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Tootie is traumatized by the thought of moving that she runs out into the snow and smashes her snow people and the family don't know how to calm her. The doctor comes and they finally calm her and father starts to realize that moving is too hard for his family: he decides to stay in The last scene shows the Smith family and John at the Worlds Fair: And Esther exclaims `Oh, isn't it breathtaking, John! I never dreamed anything could be so beautiful. I can't believe it. Right here where we live, Right here in ' The director Vincete Minnelli moves this family through the day to day life crisis that all families have to face. The movie is a brilliant form of life and music combined to a dramatic conclusion. This reviewer gives it a four star rating.

Meet me in st. louis 1944 film trailer
I'll take care of you kisses her runs away Me: hmmm yes that's definitely how you take care of her. The song at the opening is Good Bye My Lady Love. Vincente Minnelli rehearsed and rehearsed and rehearsed this scene, and the scene with the phone call from New York City, like a ballet because he knew the timing had to absolutely just right and there could be no sense of it not being spontaneous. No one just says something; everything has strong facial expressions and strong body language. Judy's dancing with every terrible boy at the dance is as funny as her beau dancing in is both joyous and heartbreaking. Can you tell I am from St. Louis? And my dad was a motorman on the streetcar line which indeed ran behind the Smith house on Kensington Avenue. Everything in the film is historically correct; M-G-M made sure of that.

Psychic TV brought me here. This IS a touching scene. Sentimentality such as shown here is passe now, but it still strikes a chord with me. The movie reflects back forty years before the year of release. Times were not great for everyone in 1904, but there was a certain grace and style among the middle classes now gone. Margaret O'brian aged gracefully and is a senior citizen now in her early 70s. Thanksd. I knew as soon as I started watching this, I'd get emotional. Have always loved Our Gracie. Such a voice! Such a gorgeous, earthy woman she was. Anita is the star of west side story.

Beautiful Technicolor photography, a great cast, Judy Garland still young and beautiful and a wonderful score. The "Trolley Song" is great, but Garland singing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" softly is the most tear-jerking sequence ever filmed- don't worry- everything ends happy. Yeah, there are HUGE gaps in plot and logic (Garland falls in love with "The Boy Next Door" who is so boring and a marriage proposal comes out of nowhere at the end) but it's a MGM musical! You've got to expect those! Don't rent it BUY IT. Well worth seeing. I have been a fn of Your Gracie for quite a while. She was indeed refreshing and fun, and this film is a great vehicle for her soul. Gardiner is ALWAYS fine whether he is wrking with Chaplin, Jerry Lewis or Gracie. Monty Wooley has long been a favorite here in the Colonies. (Cole Porter loved the guys humor, and he shines in this picture) Roddy has always had my respect and what a wonderful talent he had. As an actor he got better and better and passed way too soon. Thank you for posting this pleasant interlude in a world gone balmy.
